Ramsey Cascades – Great Smoky Mountains NP

Ramsey Cascades is a breathtaking waterfall located within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, boasting an impressive height of approximately 100 feet.

The trail leading to the falls is both challenging and incredibly rewarding. Covering a distance of roughly 4 miles, the round-trip accounts for a total of 8 miles. In my case, my exploration led me to venture slightly beyond, reaching around 8.24 miles.

You’ll traverse serene streams and ancient, old-growth forests along this captivating
journey. Despite the trail’s inherent challenges, the sheer beauty of your surroundings makes each step an unforgettable experience. During my hike, I found myself irresistibly drawn to detours, allowing me to appreciate the enchanting streams fully. Moreover, seeing the old-growth trees left an indelible mark on my memory. While not as colossal as the redwoods, these trees were some of the largest I’ve encountered on the East Coast.

It’s worth noting that, given the sheer beauty of Ramsey Cascades and the trail, one might have anticipated a larger number of visitors. Surprisingly, the trail remained relatively uncrowded, with just seven hiking groups encountered during my trek.

Once you arrive at Ramsey Cascades, the waterfall is nothing short of awe-inspiring. The water cascades down from the summit with great force and gracefully tumbles over a series of rocky tiers. The sight is an absolute marvel of sheer elegance and power.

At the top, I had the privilege of spending around 30 minutes in the serene presence of the falls. During this time, I took the opportunity to capture its beauty through photographs, indulged in a satisfying snack, and even struck up a conversation with a delightful couple who were also savoring the natural wonder. My adventurous spirit led me to cross the flowing waters to capture shots from a distance, and it wasn’t long before the couple joined me in this venture.

To our delight, we discovered salamanders in the water, and they kindly pointed them out to me. We exchanged valuable insights on capturing the beauty of the falls through photography. In a friendly and warm gesture, the couple asked me to take their picture at the falls, and in return, they managed to capture a truly wonderful shot of me. After
relishing some snacks and parting ways with the couple, I descended the trail, fully immersed in the tranquility and allure of the surrounding natural beauty.

  1. What a refreshing post to look at with the greens and the waterfall! The first photo of the waterfall is very nicely framed, with the darker shaded foliages and the steps as foreground… lovely!
