While on our way from Mammoth Cave National Park to Hot Springs National Park, we made a stopover in West Memphis, AR. While the city itself wasn’t overly exciting, we discovered a wonderful rail trail that provided ample opportunities for exploration. The Big River Trail System includes a crossing from Arkansas to Tennessee, Ducks Unlimited Park Loop, Big River Trail, Levee Trail, and a section in the St. Francis National Forest. The trail system spans over 120 miles, with additional expansions in the planning stages. During our visit, we were able to explore all sections except for the one in the St. Francis National Forest, leaving us with more of the trail to discover.

Our adventures on the trail offered some remarkable experiences. The highlight was undoubtedly biking and walking across the Big River Crossing. This iconic river crossing provided us with sweeping views of the mighty Mississippi River and the city of Memphis, TN. It was truly awe-inspiring to soak in the panoramic views of the river while watching boats and barges traverse its waters. The Memphis skyline, featuring landmarks like the Bass Pro Shops at the Pyramid and the Hernando de Soto Bridge, added to the picturesque scenery. After crossing the bridge, we found ourselves exploring Martyrs Park, a serene location that offered tranquil views of the river. The park pays homage to civil rights activists through its monuments and memorials.

The bike path along the Levee Trail was well-maintained and featured a flat, gravel surface. Biking along this trail provided a peaceful experience, with views of lush greenery and glimpses of wildlife. As I walked along the Duck’s Unlimited Park Loop, we encountered a few spots with loose gravel. However, these spots turned out to be treasure troves for rockhounding enthusiasts like me. I had the pleasure of discovering beautiful agates and jaspers, and I couldn’t help but wish for more time to explore the area further, as there were countless captivating rocks to admire. This part of the trail also allowed us to slow down and immerse ourselves in nature. I took advantage of the opportunity to capture several photographs of birds,
butterflies, and wildflowers in full bloom.

In conclusion, our stopover in West Memphis, Tennessee, revealed the hidden charm of the Big River Trail System, offering us a chance to traverse iconic river crossings, hunt for rocks, and immerse ourselves in the beauty of the Mississippi River.
